3 “Back to School” Principles I Mastered On My Health Journey

3-Back-To-School-Principles-I-Mastered-On-My-Health-Journey

Can you believe the summer break is over? It’s “Back to School” time here in Georgia! I homeschool my children and I am getting them ready for the new school year. It is MY responsibility to teach them new principles and lessons to help them master their specific content areas.

But it is THEIR responsibility to learn the lessons, grow by processing challenging content and master the content by teaching others. These are the same principles that I am practicing on my health journey to be healed, set free and release the weights.

You Must Learn

On April 20, 2015, I had to finally admit to myself that I didn’t know it all! Although, I may know a lot of information and am very resourceful, I didn’t have all of the answers to resolving my weight problems. Admitting this was my first step to surrender to God and remaining open to learning new things that would help me to lose the weight.

God is my creator and is omniscient. So He would know ALL the lessons I needed to learn in order to be successful on my journey of transformation. As I learned to trust Him, He has continuously given me insight into things that I CAN do to help my process. My family has a history of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. So eating mindlessly definitely wasn’t benefitting my health.

As I’m learning more about nutrition, I am making healthier choices. I’m learning how to create healthier recipes. I’m even trying new recipes to satisfy my sweet tooth. Google and Pinterest are my friends! LOL This picture is the skinny banana blueberry muffin recipe found here.

I don’t know everything about nutrition. It’s still a trial and error process for me. But I am open and willing to learn. I know that I am creating lifestyle changes on this journey!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.”

~ Proverbs 3:5-6 NASB

You Must Grow

If you’re not growing, then you’re dying. I know that sounds harsh. But it is the truth. Every day that we’re alive is another opportunity for us to grow; become better. But how do we grow and become better? We must challenge ourselves to do something that we’ve never done. Just like my children will be challenged with new concepts this school year in order for them to process more complex concepts as they get older, I must do the same thing on my health journey.

In order to grow, I had to do things outside of my comfort zone. I had to push through the pain, discomfort and my fears. The funny thing is once I did this, I realized that it wasn’t so bad after all. I realized that I COULD accomplish something that was so challenging and daunting. I could truly live out Philippians 4:13 “I CAN do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.”

In this picture, I am doing a full push-up without modifications. This is a huge victory and shows growth. When I started my journey, I could barely do 1 push-up with modifications. But now, 15 months later, I can do up to 6 push-ups with no modifications. I’ll keep growing! I’ll keep pushing myself to become better and stronger by increasing my faith as I do the work!

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

~ James 1:2-4 NLT

You Must Teach Others

How do I know that my children have mastered the concepts I’ve taught? When they can successfully teach another person the same concept, this is mastery. Since my children are home schooled, this year they will practice teaching each other some concepts. My oldest son is 16, middle son is 12 and my daughter is 5. I’m excited to see their growth.

Before I started my journey of transformation, I knew that I was called to help others find success on their journey. But God showed me that I couldn’t help others be set free, if I was still in bondage. My transparency is not to for me to be prideful, but to teach others that they can experience the same success on their journey. Of course, our journeys are unique. However, the principles are the same. If you allow God to heal the root issues that caused the weight gain, then He will guide you to do the work to release the weight.

I share my journey via blog and video broadcasts to hold myself accountable and to show others the good, bad and ugly process. My prayer is that people will connect with my journey and find a bit of themselves. Then they can be encouraged to build their own relationship with God and move forward on their journey of transformation. This is a screenshot of one of my videos that I shared regarding “4 Reasons Why I Track My Weight Loss Daily.” Here’s the link.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,
19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”

~Luke 4:18-19 NASB

You are never too old to learn, grow and teach others. As long as you remain humble and willing, God can complete the work that He began in you.
